Viral Trends of 2017

Caitlin Wang, Staff Writer

Let’s be real. So far, 2017 has seen quirky trends that have somehow blown up the Internet. However, many people have surprisingly enjoyed watching or trying out these unthinkable activities.

The Floor is….LAVA! This catchphrase has been constantly thrown out by people on the streets, stores, and even at school. Obviously, the floor is not legitimately lava. The saying is merely used as a way to attract attention. When someone screams this, everyone immediately jumps on something so their feet won’t be touching the floor. It’s just a joke, but it was clever while it lasted.

Of course, we can’t forget about Salt Bae. It’s practically a classic meme at this point. Made viral by a Turkish chef, Nusret Gokce, it’s quite unique. Chef Gokce thinks of cooking as a form of art, performing his signature pose while he adds salt onto his dishes.

“Cash me ousside, howbow dah,” said a 13-year-old girl known as Danielle Bregoli. The Dr. Phil Show aired an episode about a an uncontrollable teenager. Her mother complained about her reckless behavior, an example of exactly how no parent wants their child to grow up to be. The teenager angrily spit out to the audience, “Cash me ousside howbow dah?” What she meant to say was, ‘Catch me outside, how about that?’ In Bregoli’s language, it means to fight outside. After the interview went viral, people all over started to use the catchphrase as a way of telling people to “fight them.” It simply symbolizes violence. But is hilarious at the same time.

Yet another popular trend, the Snapchat hot dog filter. There’s just something about the break-dancing wiener that gets everyone laughing. For a while, it made Snapchat less dry, and people were motivated to use the filter. The hot dog was different, and it had split personalities. One family even claimed it “kicked my daughter!”

The distracted boyfriend. A viral picture has blown up the Internet, once again. The picture depicts a man walking with his girlfriend, but with his head turned, looking at another woman. His girlfriend is shown looking at him with a disgusted look. People have added their own labels to the distracted boyfriend, his girlfriend, and the girl the man is looking at. It’s crazy what people have come up with so far.

Of course, these are not all the popular trends that have caught on in 2017. A few last examples are DIY slime and “clout goggles.” At this point, who knows what 2018 will bring into the scene?
