Cadence Chen, Staff Writer

Washi tapes are small rolls of tape that come in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles. They are generally used to decorate things, whether it be a notebook, laptop, pencil holder, or your bedroom wall. People love washi tape because of its versatility and creative potential. According to freshman Emily Lam, “Washi tape is [her] only will to live.” Emily often uses washi tape in notebooks to add a pop color. “Without washi tape, my life would be washi-less,” Emily jokes.

Washi tape is a masking tape made from Japanese rice paper. The rice paper makes the tape easy to rip with your fingers, so you don’t need scissors to cut it like many other tapes. Besides it being aesthetic and super cute, washi tape also has many other benefits that make it appealing to buyers. It’s strong, yet extremely thin and is easy to reposition, so you don’t have to worry about your paper ripping. Washi tape also happens to be slightly transparent, so layering it can create a cool effect.

One of the uses of Washi Tape is to use it to decorate your home. washi tape is pretty and not permanent, so feel free to create designs on your wall using it! Jenni Radosevich at ISpyDIY offers more ideas like a city skyline for a headboard or designs for stairs. Radosevich believes washi tape is “one of the greatest craft inventions ever,” and that the “patterns, the colors, [and] the ability to put [the] paper tape on anything makes it so fun to use.”

In addition, washi tape can be used for scrapbooking and bullet journaling to add a pop of color and to make it more interesting. Layering the tape can create more unique and beautiful patterns and tends to catch people’s eyes. With washi tape, simply taping in a piece of lined paper will add interest. The fun colors and patterns can also be cut out with an Exacto knife to create different shapes such as triangles or stars.

If you’re looking for an easy to use, simple product that will liven up any page it is put on, buy some Washi Tape. There are so many fun colors and patterns to choose from, you’ll never get bored of it. “Because of washi tape, I am not only fulfilled and happy, but my notebook also reflects that,” freshman Kelly Tsun says.
