Boys Varsity Tennis Updates

Melody Yang, Writer

Our AHS Boys Varsity Tennis Team has recently played many games in their season so far with much success in all of them. Currently, with the exception of one game, the varsity team has beaten all their opponents. Their overall record has seen an improvement from last year, and the team, collectively, has also had many successes.

Sophomore Winston Li expressed, “Overall, the team has been doing great. We are currently ranked 4th in the Southern section for CIF.” Team Captain senior Matthew Feng also had similar opinions. He said, “Our team has been playing very well in that we have won many close sets and overall matches as well.”

Since last year, the team has lost four seniors but has, in fact, gone up in rank. Matthew revealed, “Despite the loss of four seniors last year, our team has rebounded well through the addition of a few players and practicing hard as a team as well.” Sophomore Spencer Cheung added, “Compared to last year, I would say that we are doing better because we won the Beckman tournament this year while we only came in 4th last year at this same tournament.” The team has also been gaining better results as compared to last season.

As a result of this improvement, it’s clear that the team has also gained many achievements. The team has beaten the majority of their opponents 18-0, with the exceptions of Mira Costa High School (MCHS) and Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS). The team beat CVHS 17-1 and lost to MCHS by four games with a score of 7-11. It is currently undefeated in league and has a current ranking of #4 in Division 1. As mentioned before, the team has also won the Beckman tournament where “16 of the top SoCal teams compete against one another,” as said by Matthew.

Despite these achievements, there is still more work to be done. Matthew remarked, “In tennis, different players have different strengths and weaknesses, but, in general, our team has room to improve on our doubles chemistry as there have been a few changes made in the lineup throughout the year.” Spencer also expressed that the team needs “to improve on teamwork and communication.” Winston, stating a personal improvement, said that he needs “to move more and play smarter on the court.”

The varsity tennis team this year has had many successes and achievements so far, and has done better than last season through their hard work. There are improvements that can be made, but they have already accomplished much by winning league and only losing one game. Great job and good luck in all future games!
