We live in a time of high stress, intense distraction, pervasive addiction, and social isolation. Our brains and bodies are also undermined by toxic exposures, denatured foods, and a loss of healthy, human lifestyles. All this takes a heavy toll on our sense of dignity, self control, and basic mental well being. Modern medicine often tries to frame psychiatric disorders, also called mental illnesses, as chemical imbalances on the brain. These imbalances are often treated with pharmaceuticals meant to repair the imbalance and restore normal brain function. But this approach largely ignores the larger social, cultural, and environmental factors that are affecting our mental and emotional well-being. While pharmaceuticals can offer an essential support in some instances, mental health disorders can also improve with a variety of approaches such as physical exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy, supplements, light therapy, and relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and music therapy. Proper nutrition, exercise, a healthy social life, and a sense of purpose and meaning are all requisite elements for mental health.
