Making Headway to CIF

Kali Tam, Writer

Girls Soccer has been performing well so far this year. With a strong lineup of players, the Division 3 team is currently standing with a league record of 9-3-2, and the members are now getting closer to reaching their goal of making it into CIF playoffs and becoming the champions once again.

The team began their season with a rocky start. Its first game against La Salle High School ended with a 0-1 loss, while their next game against Monrovia High School ended as a 0-0 tie. However, these losses did not break the girls’ spirit and instead, pushed them to strive for better performance. With their determination to continue the season on the right foot, the players began working even harder during their practices to ensure their future games would be more positive. And this hard work paid off! At their next three games against Burbank, Hoover, and John Muir, the girls came back with impressive wins—6-0, 2-0, and 9-0 respectively—their strong defense prevented any of their opponents from scoring a goal while their incredible offense allowed them to easily score points.

Junior Teresa Rosas, who has been part of the soccer program for three years, expressed that the team this year has “amazing teamwork and extremely dedicated players who are willing to work hard every day during practices and in games,” which has put them in the good position that they are currently in right now. She added on that because of their strong teamwork, they are able to overcome many obstacles, and one game that especially reveals this is their home game against Burroughs. During this game, Teresa stated that “the girls faced a lot of pressure going into it since Burroughs is one of the main rivals for Girls Varsity.” To overcome this pressure, “every team member worked together to maintain an enthusiastic spirit throughout the game,” allowing them to win the “intense game.” However, Teresa revealed that the team needs to “work on maintaining focus, which has a huge impact on how the game turns out; there were a few games that should have had a better result if [the girls] had not lost focus of their goal.”

Like all sports teams, Girls Varsity Soccer comes with its own strengths and weaknesses. However, with its long practices, strong teamwork, and each player’s motivation to improve, we are sure that Girls Soccer will succeed in reaching its goals. We wish the best of luck to the players for the remainder of the season!
